A quarter of people have attempted DIY dental care, rather than visiting a dentist, according to a survey.
Crippling fears of sitting in a dentist's chair while receiving professional treatment has led to 25% of people testing out home remedies on their teeth
A survey of 2,000 people found those living in Liverpool and Manchester were most likely to pull out their own loose teeth rather than visit a dental practice, with 19% saying they’d rather sort the problem themselves.
Londoners were named as the second group of people most likely to sort out annoying loose teeth, with 15% saying they’d hold off on a trip to the dentists and take things into their own hands.
When it comes to reasons for dentist dodging, 24% of people said they hated the whirring sound of the drill and 13% feared being injected with a needle.
While fear of the dentist prevents some people seeking treatment, 41% of those surveyed said the price of treatment puts them off booking an appointment.
Worries about follow-up appointments and the cost of surgery showed nearly half of people would avoid the dentist rather than be left out of pocket.
Less obvious reasons for hating the dentist included the smell of the surgery and not wanting to be lectured on lifestyle habits.
“We can’t even imagine what methods were attempted. Tying one end of a piece of string around a decaying tooth and the other to a doorknob, perhaps?”
